Artist Statement

Artist Statement: Resume

Art solves visual problems that can bring a new sense of creativity to the questions one comes across in science. Conversely, the research and critical thinking learned from science has taught me to keep detailed notes, experiment with many different artistic techniques, and push me to explore new ways of thinking. This interchange creates space for scientists and artist to learn from one another.

In combining and displaying my physics and artistic research, the audience can experience the process firsthand. In physics, most of my research is about glass, and in ceramics, glass takes the form of glaze on my artworks. Additionally, I chose to include some of my handwritten pages from my glass research notebook. These pages provide context by showing actual research data alongside my art. In showing these things together, the viewer gets to visualize and understand the similarities in art making and scientific research.

The bowls, parabolas, tiles and constellation pieces share the idea of using art to connect and explain science. The bowls, for example, have glass melted on the bottom, which directly relates back to my physics research. The tiles, transparencies, and whiteboard notes come directly from my art and physics research notebooks. The tiles with decals specifically show graphs collected from my research illustrating data from a number of analytical techniques that tell us about the structure of glass.
